10 WARNING SIGNS OF A SOCIOPATH

THE 10 DANGER SIGNS

Sociopath expert Dr Robert Hare has devised the following checklist to help people recognise sociopathic traits.

1. SUPERFICIAL charm. Smooth, engaging and charming, a sociopath will never become tongue-tied or embarrassed.
•Often compose poetry and fictitious stories where the lead character (assigned the sex of the writer) is the complete package.

2. OVER-INFLATED sense of self-worth. Sociopaths believe they are superior human beings.
•Feel they do no wrong. Often assigns blame for the negative aspects of their life on others.
•They are easily paranoid and possessive if they believe they are in a relationship (belief could stem from simply chatting with the opposite sex on Facebook).

3. PRONE to boredom. They feel the need to be stimulated constantly.
•Leads to alcohol and drug abuse which takes a prominent place in their actual life and fictitious compositions. (Alcoholism runs hand in hand with ASPD).

4. PATHOLOGICAL liars. Sociopaths will be deceptive and dishonest.
• They will lie about all aspects of their life to become the individual they feel the person they are interested in using is looking for.
• Social Networking sites such as Facebook are their main tool to perpetuate their schemes.
• They often look up past acquaintances and completely disregard their marital/relationship status (see #2).  They find it easier to re-initiate a friendship than to establish a new one.

5. MANIPULATIVE. They will say and do anything to deceive and cheat others.

6. LACK of remorse. No sense of the suffering of their victims.

7. LIMITED range of feelings. Don’t expect them to express anything other than happiness or sadness.
• Most frequently anger and arousal..

8. CALLOUS. Cold, contemptuous, inconsiderate and tactless are apt words to describe them.

9. THEY live a parasitic lifestyle. Sociopaths are often financially dependent on others.
• The most severe has a history of numerous psychiatric hospitalizations.
• Unable to maintain gainful employment thus live of of the system- mental disability checks.
• They bounce between few friends and family be it siblings or aunts sponging their way through while wasting their disability payments on cigarettes, alcohol and drugs while spending most of their time cultivating their life if deceit.

10. THEY can’t control their behaviour. When challenged, sociopaths will appear irritable, annoyed and impatient.
• Due to their paranoia they are easily irritated when someone else figures them out or when someone refuses to provide what they demand.
• This behavior leads to legal issues and incarceration due to stalking, assault/battery and resisting arrest.

The signs are simple and easily discerned if the time is taken to look past their initial attempts to manipulate and deceive. In this day and age it is best to perform a background check to get an unbiased snap shot of the true life they live.  It doesn't cost much... in the end it will save you from a great deal of emotional and physical abuse as well as protect your finances and good name.

SOCIOPATHS AND STALKING.

Paradoxically, sociopaths are egomaniacs without pride. Their shamelessness, lack of boundaries and hunger for control often leads them to relentlessly pursue individuals who don’t want them, and who repeatedly reject them. Normal human beings not only don’t desire to stalk others because they have boundaries, but also they would feel too deeply embarrassed and humiliated to continue pursuing individuals who have rejected them over and over again.

This common sense logic does NOT apply to sociopaths. In fact, like in the movie Fatal Attraction and many other films about disordered creepy individuals, sociopaths ESPECIALLY pursue those who don’t want them. Not only directly, through stalking and cyberstalking, but also indirectly, by manipulating other individuals under their control to stalk and harass the targets who have rejected them.

Being social predators driven by the need for power and control, sociopaths can’t take rejection. Like with any predatory behavior, observing, following and stalking the prey is part and parcel of what sociopaths do. Sometimes their harmful behavior is opportunistic, as is the case with serial killers who seize the moment–and their victims–without observing them for an extended period of time in advance. But very often sociopaths plan their actions cold-heartedly and methodically in advance: and not only as they pertain to violent crimes, but also as they pertain to getting anything they want: your money, your body, your heart and/or your life.

At the beginning of the relationship stalking behavior may seem romantic. It’s presented under the guise of not being able to be away from you; needing you all the time, wanting you. However, this constant attention masks the predator’s main intent: to control you and isolate you from others. Consequently, even in the most pleasant and blinding phase of a relationship with a sociopath–the honeymoon phase–dangerous individuals exhibit predatory behavior and traits.

After the victim ends a relationship with a sociopath, this behavior is likely to escalate into downright stalking. This happens for the reasons I have explained in previous articles:

1) sociopaths, being control-driven individuals, can’t take rejection

2) sociopaths, being control-driven, also don’t like to relinquish control over their targets

3) sociopaths, being control-driven, want to WIN. To them, winning means catching their targets into their spider’s nets and destroying them

4) sociopaths, being control-driven, want to exact vengeance and intimidate those who no longer worship them, want them, or obey them blindly.

Notice that the common denominator that explains sociopath behavior is the fact that sociopaths need to be IN CONTROL. They are principally motivated by the need to exercise power over others. Stalking behavior is a common strategy that sociopaths use to intimidate their non-compliant victims and an effort to punish them and regain control. For their victims, this is particularly difficult to deal with because stalking laws vary from state to state and because stalking–particularly cyberstalking–is very difficult to establish under the current laws. Generally speaking, one must establish a pattern of stalking as well as harmful intent and threat to safety: all from the same source/stalker. Since stalkers can be very stealthy and know how to erase their traces, reroute their IP address and easily get new email addresses, it’s not easy to take legal action against a sociopathic (cyber)stalker.

However, I’d advise victims to keep all the emails, texts, Facebook messages and wall posts, phone bills as evidence of (cyber)stalking and share it immediately with the authorities, their therapist, their friends and others. The more evidence is out there which pertains to the harassment, the better your chances become for taking effective legal action against the sociopath and even putting him in jail for his crime. Also I recommend exposing the sociopath by posting scans of the email and message transcripts along with their picture and outcome of criminal background searches with arrest history particularly that involve trespassing, cyberstalking, assault and battery(especially perpetrated on a female), resisting arrest, DWI's on appropriate web sites(cheaterville, playerblock, Jayden Hills) and forums as a warning to others. Any single or combination of the above offenses especially if they occur more than once indicates the sociopaths lack of respect for existing boundaries (legal and personal) plus the assault and resisting arrest is indicative of the "win at all costs mentality". Pay attention as well to any civil judgments, bankruptcy and employment history because the sociopath feels that everything is owed to them and most live a life proclaiming that they are the "victims" and will look to welfare system or disability as primary means of income while they live a nomadic lifestyle- moving from place to place.
As its been said, "the best defense is a good offense!" Expose the sociopath for what he is and utilize the legal system to put him in his place which is a nobody that will never have anything but a miserable life.

ASPD and Paranoia

Many people completely misunderstand the traits of a sociopath. Sociopaths do NOT have any real friends, they do not want friends, nor do they have the emotions that are required to be a friend. Instead of friends, a sociopath wants loyal followers, people who will do anything to help the sociopath achieve their own narcissistic goals. They gain followers by using an act — known as their “persona”— pretending to be an upright, trusting person, and a great friend. Their persona is nothing like their real personality. But they are quite believable.

The terms “friend” and “sociopath” are mutually exclusive. What does that mean? It means you can have a real friend, and you may know a sociopath, but you cannot have a real friend who’s also a sociopath.. What you can be is a loyal follower, or even a disciple to a sociopath, and as such, they will treat you as if you were a friend … but it is not sincere. As long as you provide some value to them, something they need, value as simple as companionship, they will keep you around. But once they tire of your companionship, you will be left with no doubt.

As most people are aware, a sociopath, or more precisely, someone afflicted with Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD) and/or Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), does not feel any guilt or remorse for the things they’ve done to others, but on a larger scale, it’s not just those emotions that they lack … sociopaths do not have any of the typical emotions that most people take for granted.

So along with lacking negative emotions, such as guilt and remorse, they also lack what most would consider positive emotions, such as compassion, love, joy, security, and passion. This is what’s often overlook, but critically important: a sociopath’s lack of emotions does not end with the negative emotions. Hence, a person with APD or NPD does not have the capacity to feel any positive emotions, preventing them from thinking about anyone else, but themselves. A sociopath cannot feel the emotions required in a friendship, so they act them out. And often, they over-act with a certain plastic appeal.

Most sociopaths or psychopaths have likely identified how they differ from most people, and in their minds, they’re superior to virtually all of “us.” They do not need friends … they need loyal followers. A sociopath cares only about themselves, and how they can use others to strengthen their narcissistic goals.
As soon as you don’t offer them the same value, or you hesitate doing something they ask of you, or they simply sense something different — watch how fast that “best friend” relationship will collapse. You were certain they felt for you as you did for them. No one wants to believe how sinister and cold another “human” can be. Most people won’t believe it until it happens to them … it’s the definition of intense gut-wrenching.

You were in their inner circle. You know a lot. Sociopaths often suffer with paranoia, and even if it’s their own paranoia that causes them to sense a lack of loyalty from you, it’s no different to them … it’s just as real.

Consider this, and trust me, whatever your sociopath friend may say to counter this, it’s just what they do best — lie. A sociopath not only does not feel guilt or remorse, but it does not stop there … they do not have any typical human emotions.

They do not feel love, friendship, compassion … nothing, it’s all faked. It’s called their public persona. A sociopath’s persona has virtually no resemblance to their true personality. They know they are different, but they may know nothing more than that. It’s not of interest to them. What is of ultimate interest is control.

They build a group of followers by faking friendship, charm, compassion … until people are so sucked-in and so brainwashed that they now respect and admire a very evil sociopath. Some sociopaths wear their persona all the time, i.e., 24/7. Those sociopaths know all too well that what they do, the things they get away with, would likely be just as revolting to their family as with anyone else.

Oh, and that family consisting of a spouse, and 2.5 kids? It’s all part of the act. They want to blend in. They know a family is an important element. They know belonging to a church, a synagogue, or any place that brings people together to worship, will assuredly benefit the cause of blending in.
A sociopath knows their family members cannot be aware of their real activities, because if they are, they would become a threat just as anyone else would. And the sociopath responds to a family-based threat no differently then by someone they hardly know. They must protect themselves from exposure … any slight threat or risk must be dealt with immediately, with what I call: offensive-revenge.
When looking at a sociopath, all you see is another person. What you will never see is that person’s history. Their history is like a hostility throttle. Depending on what they’ve gotten away with in the past determines how they will respond to an attempted exposure now and degree is based on his degree of paranoia.
One sociopath with whom I am familiar changes his city of residence weekly on Facebook due to his intense paranoia. He is certain that he is being tracked by people which he conned money from in the past and to be fair these individuals are the type to hunt him down not because of the money but rather the lack of respect they were shown. Truth be known however, he is in the same place because his limited "disability" income does not afford him the luxury of living the truly nomadic lifestyle he tries to portray. Anyone that knows of his financial challenges and deficiency laugh at the facade. In his paranoia and through his narcissistic personality the lies fuel his delusion of superiority as consistent with ASPD. He is such a joke but hey, he's free entertainment.

SPOTTING A SOCIOPATH!!

Romantic relationships can and should be wonderful with the correct person. A relationship with the wrong individual, however, can lead to years of heartache, emotional/social damage, physical damage, and even emotional, mental and physical abuse. And sometimes, that can even lead to death. So it is very important to really KNOW who you are communicating with in the first place BEFORE you destroy your life for them.. A damaging adult partner can damage us, damage our loved ones, and even damage the way we feel about love and romance in the future. They can turn what is supposed to be a loving, supporting, and understanding relationship into the “fatal attraction” often described in movies.

There is a very important statement to consider when you are trying to find out what someone is really like. And it is this:
"The greatest enemy of that which is excellent is not that which is blatantly bad, but that which APPEARS to be good."

If someone was openly insane and abusive with you, you would notice it right off the bat, and that would be the end of the relationship. But some(mentally ill Sociopaths) are much better than others at hiding from you who they REALLY ARE. They can appear to be very good, wonderful, and even perfect. In fact, many times these individuals have been called Sociopaths because they know just how to manipulate others so well. They can appear, at first, to be the most charming, caring, loving, fun individual who sweeps you off your feet with their charm and looks. Years ago men like this were called "smooth talking sales men and " Con-Artists." So, they can APPEAR to be good, but in reality they are not only bad, but VERY BAD.

So here are some red flags for you to be aware of so you can spot a sociopath before you continue a relationship that will ruin your life.

A Sociopath is a type of person that creates much social, emotional and psychological damage. A sociopath has permanent personality characteristics that create this damage. These are characteristics that they accept simply as the way they are and not a problem or psychological difficulty. In one sense, they have always lived with this personality and behavior, often something they probably learned from their relatives/family. Psychologists usually treat the victims of  a sociopath who arrive at the office severely depressed with their self-confidence and self-esteem totally destroyed.

The following list is an attempt to outline the characteristics of a Sociopath and provide a manner in which women and men can identify potentially damaging relationships, before they are themselves severely damaged emotionally or even physically. If the person you are communicating with possesses even one of these features, there is risk in the relationship. More than three of these indicators and you are involved with a Sociopath in a very high risk relationship that will eventually create damage to you. When a high number of these features are present, it’s not a probability or possibility, you WILL be hurt and damaged if you continue with any form of a relationship.

1.      Commits to you very quickly: You will find that a Sociopath has very shallow and superficial emotions and connections with others. Within a very short period of time he or she says, “I Love You,” or wants to marry or commit to you. You may be caught up in the “it was meant to be” syndrome the sociopath portrays.  In less than a few weeks you’ll hear that you’re " the love of their life, they want to be with you forever, and they want to marry you." You’ll receive gifts, a variety of promises, and be showered with their attention and nice gestures. This is the “honeymoon phase” - where they catch you and convince you that they are the best thing that ever happened to you.

Stable people will require alot more information about someone before they make a commitment, and they will also be much more patient with the entire process. The very quick commitment on the part of the sociopath is also a sign of superficiality and shallow emotions, which is also the very reason that the controller can detach from you just as quickly. Believe it or not, a sociopath will be talking about moving in with you or getting married to you in less than four weeks, or very early in the relationship.

 2.     Temper: A sociopath has a scary temper or history of temper issue.. If the person which you are communicating has a history of or currently blows up and does dangerous things, like driving too fast because they’re mad, road rage, destroying/throwing things, getting into fights, or threatening others - that temper will soon be turned in your direction. In the beginning of the relationship, you will be exposed to “witnessed violence” - fights with others, threats toward others, angry outbursts at others, etc. You will also hear of violence in their life. You will see and witness this temper - throwing things, yelling, cursing, driving fast, hitting the walls, and kicking things. But it will at first be directed towards others, not you.

The Sociopath will have a legal history- arrests for various issues such as assault, trespassing, DUI, etc.  They pride themselves in showing contempt for authority.

The Sociopath will even enlist your sympathy for what they are going through with others and expect you to take their side and support their anger.  They will maintain that they are always the victim.

As time passes and the relationship progresses you become intimidated and you begin to fear their potential for violence. The Sociopath quickly assures you that they are angry at others or situations, not at you. And you want to believe that. You want to believe that they will never direct the hostility and violence at you, but they are clearly letting you know that they have that ability and capability - and that it might come your way. Statistics have shown that it will.

3.       It’s Always Your Fault: A Sociopath blames you for their anger as well as any other behavior that is incorrect. They will maintain that all the legal issues they underwent was none of their fault.  They were the victim.  When they cheat on you, yell at you, treat you badly, damage your property or embarrass you publicly, it’s somehow your fault. Anything that they do wrong, according to them YOU caused. So it is your fault that they had to act badly. A Sociopath tells you their anger and misbehavior would not have happened if you had not made some simple mistake, had loved them more, or had not questioned their behavior.

A Sociopath never, repeat “never,” takes personal responsibility for their behavior - it’s always the fault of someone else. They give you the impression that you had it (anger, yelling, assault) coming and deserved the anger, violence, pouting, or physical display of aggression.

4.     Entitlement: A Sociopath has a tremendous sense of entitlement, the attitude that they have a perfectly logical right to do whatever they desire. They are completely self-absorbed and arrogant. Their anger at others for perceived injustices will one day be used against you also. If you disobey their desires or demands, or violate one of their rules, or dare to disagree with them, they feel they are entitled to punish you in any manner they see fit. They treat you like a child and they are the parent.  The Sociopath will look for and do whatever it takes to not work to make a living.  They will look to the welfare system or the disability system.  Fact is that their psychological illness prevents them from being able to maintain employment so they feel entitled that the system owes them a living.

5.     Bad Stories: People often let you know about their personality by the stories they tell about themselves. It’s the old story about giving a person enough rope and they’ll hang themselves. The stories a person tells informs us of how they see themselves, what they think is interesting, and what they think will impress you. A Sociopath tells stories of violence, aggression, being insensitive to others, rejecting others, etc. Pay close attention to their arrest record as well for it summarizes the Sociopaths personality.  They may tell you about past relationships and, in every case, they assure you that they were treated horribly despite how wonderful they were to that person. They brag about their temper and outbursts, because they don’t see anything wrong with violence and actually take pride in the “I don’t take nothing from nobody” attitude. People define themselves with their stories, much like a culture is described by it’s folklore and legends. Listen to these stories - they tell you how you will eventually be treated and what’s coming your way.  Sociopaths live in a world of fiction.

6.     The Reputation: Mentally healthy individuals are consistent in their personality and their behavior. A Sociopath may have two distinct reputations - a group of individuals who will give you glowing reports and a group that will warn you that they are serious trouble. If you ask ten people about a new restaurant - five say it’s wonderful and five say it’s a hog pit - you clearly understand that there’s some risk involved in eating there.

A Sociopath may actually glorify  their reputation as a “butt kicker," “womanizer," “hot temper,” or “being crazy.” They may tell you stories where other’s have called them crazy or suggested that they receive professional help. They will boast that they are accountable to no one.  Pay attention to the reputation. Reputation is the public perception of an individual’s behavior. If the reputation has two sides, good and bad, your risk is high. You will be dealing with the bad side as the relationship progress. With severe behavior problems, a Sociopath will be found to have almost no friends, just acquaintances. Their relationship with their family is strained at best and generally has a divorce or string of divorces in their wake.  They have a history of sporadic relationship with their children if a parent.  Emotionally healthy and moral individuals will not tolerate friendships with sociopaths that treat others so badly.

7.      Discounted Feelings/Opinions: A sociopath is so self-involved and self-worshiping that the feelings and opinions of others are considered worthless. As the relationship continues and you begin to question what you are feeling or seeing in their behavior, you will be told that your feelings and opinions don’t make sense, they’re silly, and that you are emotionally disturbed to even think of such things. A Controller has no interest in your opinion or your feelings, but they will be disturbed and upset that you dare question their behavior. A sociopath is extremely hostile toward criticism and often reacts with anger or rage when their behavior is questioned.  Their primary purpose is to please themselves…Get what they need whether it is sex, money, the feeling of worth by destroying your previous relationship.  They are incapable of functioning in a normal loving relationship.

8.     It’s Never Enough: A Sociopath plan is to convince you that you are never quite good enough. You don’t say “I love you” enough, you don’t stand close enough, you don’t do enough for them after all their sacrifices, you cost them too much money, and your behavior always falls short of what is expected. In fact, even when you make the changes that they are demanding such as losing weight, cutting your hair or letting it grow long, dropping that friend or family member, etc. they will just find something else wrong with you. You could turn "yourself into a pretzel and swing from a chandelier" if they asked you to, and STILL it would not be good enough. This is another method of destroying your self-esteem and confidence. After months of this technique, they begin telling you how lucky you are to have them - somebody who tolerates someone so inadequate and worthless as you and that no one else would want you.

9.     Destroying Your Self-Esteem : A sociopath will begin to repeatedly put you down. They do this by correcting your smallest mistakes, making you feel like not doing things in front of them, or not telling them things that you have done, even the good things, because they will always find something wrong even with what you thought was good. So you begin to feel “on guard,” unintelligent, and depressed. They will tell you that you’re too fat, even when you are not, call you ugly or unattractive, make fun of your clothes or the way you talk or don’t talk correctly or how you look in general.  Soon they will begin to give you the impression that if you don't make some changes in these areas they are going to look elsewhere. This gradual chipping away at your confidence and self-esteem allows them to later treat you badly, as though you deserved it. In public, you will be “walking on eggshells” always fearing you are doing or saying something that will later create a temper outburst or verbal argument.

 10.  The Abuse Cycle: A sociopath cycles from mean to super nice and back again. The cycle starts when they are intentionally hurtful and mean. You may be verbally abused, cursed, and threatened over something minor. Suddenly, the next day they become sweet, and bring you candy and flowers. So you hang in there thinking maybe things are not so bad after all and maybe it is you who is exaggerating things. You hope that maybe this is the end of the cycle. But the sociopath knows exactly what they are doing. They have no intention of ending the cycle. They just don't want to lose power and control over you, so they become what they think you want in order to pacify you. And it works! But with each additional cycle your self-esteem and self-confidence is that much more eroded which is exactly what they want.

The sociopath is a master at lies and manipulation.  Evaluate your current situation and if you find that the person you are communicating with or are in a relationship falls into any of the above behavior categories, get away!  Nothing good will ever come from a continued relationship with them.  You deserve better in life.

PSYCHOPATHY VS SOCIOPATHY

Psychopathy or Sociopathy?
Dr. Robert Hare, one of the leading experts in the study of psychopathy, suggests that the difference between sociopathy and psychopathy may primarily reflect how the person using these terms views the factors contributing to the antisocial disorder.

More apt to view antisocial behavior as arising from social conflicts, sociologists typically prefer the term sociopath. Whereas, psychologists use the term psychopathy to describe a psychological disorder that is the product of a combination of psychological, biological, genetic and environmental factors (Hare 1999).

Is Psychopathy 'Nature'?

In agreement with Hare’s assessment, David Lykken, a behavioral geneticist best known for his work on twin studies, viewed psychopaths as having inherent temperamental differences such as impulsivity, fearlessness, and reduced physiological responsiveness resulting in a high level of risk-seeking behavior and lack of adherence to social norms. Recent research has demonstrated that early signs predictive of psychopathy can be present at a very young age (Viding 2005, Glenn 2007).

Is Sociopathy 'Nurture'?

He considered sociopaths to possess reasonably normal temperaments; their social pathology more a result of negative sociological factors such as parental neglect, running with the wrong crowd, poverty, and extremely low or extremely high intelligence(Lykken 1995).

Although all personality disorders are likely to be the result of some level of interaction between genetic predispositions and environmental factors, according to these definitions, psychopathy is defined primarily by hereditary and sociopathy by environmental influences.

Antisocial PD and Psychopathy
As with the conflict surrounding the nature of psychopathy versus sociopathy, there is also debate over the difference between psychopathy and Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD or ASPD).

What is APD?

According to the DSM-IV-TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), in order to be diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder, a patient must have a persistent history of disregard for and violation of the others’ rights, occurring since age 15, evidenced by three (or more) of the following traits:.
*failure to conform to social norms
*deceitfulness
*repeated lying
*use of aliases
*manipulation of others
*impulsivity or failure to plan ahead
*irritability and aggressiveness
*reckless disregard for safety of self or others
*consistent irresponsibility
*lack of remorse, indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt or mistreated others.
Limitations of ADP Diagnosis

Although the description in DSM-TR reflect the perspective that psychopathy is synonymous with APD, more recent research has cast doubt (Cunningham 1998, Hare 1999, Herve 2006).

The DSM diagnosis of APD is primarily a list of antisocial or criminal behaviors. Hugues Herve, one of the early thought leaders in the study of psychopathy, saw the diagnosis of ADP as lacking in its failure “to capture the personality features that clinicians have noted to be most essential in discriminating psychopaths from other criminals.”

The McCords, a pair of academicians offering us some of the earliest glimpses into psychopathy, share a similar view, stating that “the actions of a psychopath are only outward symptoms of a sick mind … any adequate study of the psychopath must look beyond asociality” (1964).

Psychopathy More Specific than APD

Because the diagnosis of APD is based primarily of a short list of antisocial behaviors, and psychopathy is more clearly defined as including many subjective traits, the diagnosis of APD is, by nature, less discriminating.

Hare wanted to see a more reliable, less subjective method that could more completely assess the complex traits of psychopaths, so his team of clinicians spent more than ten years developing and refining a new, more reliable assessment tool. The diagnostic device that Hare’s team developed was dubbed the Psychopathy Checklist (PCL), and is now widely used to professionally diagnose psychopathy (Hare 1985, 1999).

Using DSM and PCL as tools for assessing APD and psychopathy, respectively, most individuals with psychopathy would be clinically diagnosed as having APD, however, the majority of individuals with APD would not qualify as being psychopathic (Hare 1998).

Criminal Behavior of APD and Psychopathy

Hare’s studies of psychopathy have revealed that the percentage of incarcerated criminals that would meet the criteria of having APD is approximately 85%, however, when assessed for psychopathy, only about 20% of these same criminals would quality. Psychopathy has also proven to be a better predictor of violent and sexual recidivism as well as treatment failure (Cunningham 1998), further evidence supporting a real difference between criminals with APD and true psychopaths.

THE INTERNET AS A SOCIOPATHS PLAYGROUND

Do you know how to tell if a man is a sociopath? And do you know which women are the most likely targets of sociopaths?
Married women or just newly divorced are preferred targets for sociopaths. The age of technology we live in makes it difficult to discern initially due to just a computer screen in front of you.  Over time however, all sociopaths are easily identified.  Many marriages are put at risk due to their predatory practices.
* Essentially, a sociopath will glibly lie, charm and use others, without a moment's remorse over hurting anyone.
* They're often, but not always, more charismatic, charming than the average person.
* Sociopaths can feign every kind of emotion; yet they know only "feral" [wild, savage, deadly] pleasures.
* Sociopaths find rewards in the hunt.
* Their joys are in conquest and in winning.
* They know how to manipulate love and lust but can not feel either love or empathy.
* They have a Grandiose Sense of Self. They feel entitled to certain things as "their right."
* Shallow Emotions are all they have! When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. They are outraged by insignificant matters, yet remain unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person.
*Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises!
* Highly Manipulative and Conning.  They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible.
*They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used.
*Their goal is to dominate and humiliate their victims.

Using the official diagnostic version from The DSM-IV-TR and The American Journal of Psychiatry (diagnostic manuals) and my own training and experience, here's some help in understanding the sociopath.
Antisocial personality disorder is characterized by a lack of regard for the moral or legal standards in the local culture. There is a marked inability to get along with others or abide by societal rules. Individuals with this disorder are sometimes called psychopaths or sociopaths.

Diagnostic Criteria (DSM-IV)

1. Since the age of fifteen there has been a disregard for and violation of the right's of others, those right's considered normal by the local culture, as indicated by at least three of the following:
A. Repeated acts that could lead to arrest.
B. Conning for pleasure or profit, repeated lying, or the use of aliases.
C. Failure to plan ahead or being impulsive.
D. Repeated assaults on others.
E. Reckless when it comes to their or others safety.
F. Poor work behavior or failure to honor financial obligations.
G. Rationalizing the pain they inflict on others.

2. At least eighteen years in age.

3. Evidence of a Conduct Disorder, with its onset before the age of fifteen.

4. Symptoms not due to another mental disorder.

These people are mentally ill and extremely dangerous! The following precautions will help to protect you from the destructive acts of which they are capable.

First, to recognize them, keep the following guidelines in mind.

(1) They are habitual liars. They seem incapable of either knowing or telling the truth about anything.

(2) They are egotistical to the point of narcissism. They really believe they are set apart from the rest of humanity by some special grace.

(3) They scapegoat; they are incapable of either having the insight or willingness to accept responsibility for anything they do. Whatever the problem, it is always someone else's fault. -there's not a hint of remorse in his behavior, attitude, or conversation. As a matter of interest, this particular person talks like he has been victimized.

by everyone in his life!

(4) They are remorselessly vindictive when thwarted or exposed.

(5) Genuine religious, moral, or other values play no part in their lives. They have no empathy for others and are capable of violence. Under older psychological terminology, they fall into the category of psychopath or sociopath, but unlike the typical psychopath, their behavior is masked by a superficial social facade.

If you have come into conflict with such a person or persons, do the following immediately!

(1) Notify your friends and relatives of what has happened.

Do not be vague. Name names, and specify dates and circumstances. Identify witnesses if possible and provide supporting documentation if any is available.

(2) Inform the police. The police will do nothing with this information except to keep it on file, since they are powerless to act until a crime has been committed. Unfortunately, that often is usually too late for the victim. Nevertheless, place the information in their hands.

Obviously, if you are assaulted or threatened before witnesses, you can get a restraining order, but those are palliative at best.
If you'd like to learn more about the traits of sociopaths, written in simple layman language, I recommend The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout, PhD (a psychotherapist with a knack for writing great books).
Dr. Stout says that as many as 4% of the population are conscienceless sociopaths who have no empathy or affectionate feelings for humans or animals. [Other sources say one in 5 of our population are sociopaths.] As Dr. Stout (The Myth of Sanity) explains, a sociopath is defined as someone who displays at least three of fifteen distinguishing characteristics, such as
* deceitfulness, * impulsivity and * a lack of remorse.
With the above stated, it is best to avoid the development of any relationship online either with a stranger or old acquaintence especially if you are married.  One example that comes to mind is a married woman finds an old acquantence on Facebook, they chat back and forth, he(being a sociopath as evidenced through meeting all the criteria) begins manipulating the communication.  As time passes the woman's husband finds out about the emotional affair (hadnt progressed to face to face meeting so nothing physical occurred).  The woman breaks off contact.  She receives a strange and harrassing text message a couple of months later which prompted her to contact the sociopath during such time he of course denies sending the text(he is a known pathological liar) and then begins rambling on about how his son was "busted for selling drugs" and he didnt know what he was going to do.  He then mentions that he(the man, not the son) had many, many past hospitalizations due to psychiatric issues over the course of his life (Dorothea Dix Hospital as well as others).  This is something the woman didn't know in the beginning and she admittedly would have never communicated with him had she known the degree of his mental illness.  This man had all the warning signs of a sociopath:  grandiose sense of self, pathological lying, Lack of remorse, shame and guilt(long legal history to include assault on a female), shallow, need for stimulation(very promiscuous, lack of empathy(stated he never looked for trouble but trouble always seemed to find him and even believes that he was doing nothing wrong trying to break up a marriage), poor behavior controls(legal history), early behavior problems/Juvenile deliquency(his legal issues and alcohol abuse began in his teens), Irresponsible and unreliable(chose to allow his children to grow up without his presence), Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic lifestyle(claims income from disability received due to an injury-(more like disability due to his mental issues) and owns no home, goes from place to place of those that will allow him to stay although his relationship with his family is nonexistent.), and he has a criminal versatility-(he hides behind alias and tells ficticious life stories like being in movies- proved to be made up in no record of participation as an actor, extra or set employee of the movies he named).  This is just an example of how a sociopath operates and if not detected, the damage they can cause to a relationship can be devastating.  His life is built entirely on lies and manipulation and had the truth not been discovered and an end put it, lives would have been destroyed and even lost all because of the safe haven of the internet, text messages, etc.  Its best to avoid or at minimum perform a criminal background check since no person, especially a sociopath will freely tell of their history and even if they do, the sociopath, will claim to be the victim.  Many women find out way too late so be cautious and avoid becoming a true victim yourself.
